This page is devoted to my Masters I students from the University of Poitiers who are now in their 2nd semester. They are working hard to complete their classwork in order to start their internships and eventually graduate with a Masters degree in Web Editing, Library and Archival Science, and Instructional/Educational Technology. They’re getting ready to fly the coop and test their newly acquired knowledge in the adult world. Their English level is pretty advanced but as with all students, they need to improve their vocabulary, hone their listening skills and render their pronunciation comprehensible (that’s what communication is all about isn’t it?) . But as they see the homestretch ahead of them, it’s time to let our hair down and enjoy the journey to the finish line.
I. Our first class was centered around the problems of cyber crime. We studied the case of the Pennsylvania School District who gave out laptops with built-in webcams to their incoming freshman students so that they could work from home. The only problem was that some indiscreet (to say the least!) school administrators took advantage of this functionality to spy on their students:
Everyone found this behavior outrageous and unacceptable. We watched the beginning of a discussion between 2 cyber “journalists” commenting on this event and other issues in cyber world. This was a good introduction to very familiar speech (with a few sprinklings of street profanity common among young people…):

II. We inaugurated the audio/video language lab during our 2nd class and worked on “familiar” English using various audio extracts. Besides listening to Leo (above extract), we heard a country/western song called “By Time I Get To Phoenix” sung by Glen Campbell (released in 1967 andwritten by Jimmy Webb about a love affair that he had with a woman named Susan. “By The Time…” won the 1967 Grammys for Best Contemporary Male Solo Vocal Performance and Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male).
